A Two Month Virtual Journey + 6-Day Canoe Adventure

Boundaries &
Beyond

love big without losing yourself in the process

Setting healthy boundaries can often feel like a struggle between two impossible choices:

  • Give too much and lose yourself in the needs of others.

  • Hold too tight and risk keeping the world at arm’s length

Maybe you’ve learned that caring means saying yes, even when it drains you. Or maybe life has taught you that trusting others only leads to disappointment. Perhaps you fear that if you let others in, you’ll be hurt again.

But boundaries — real boundaries — are an act of love. Love for yourself and love for those around you.

Co-led by a Licensed Therapist and Healing Arts Practitioner, this adventure is so much more than just a canoe trip — it’s about learning how to love big without losing yourself in the process.

More Than Just A Wilderness Retreat

This retreat is much more than an epic canoeing and camping adventure; it’s an 8-week immersive program co-facilitated by a Licensed Therapist and Healing Arts Practitioner where you will have the chance to learn, share, and reflect.

Two Months Of Boundary Work, One Epic Retreat

Your journey begins with weekly virtual sessions, where you’ll explore the edges of self-trust, compassion, and communication in a supportive space—so by the time you’re paddling through the Boundary Waters, you’ll already feel the shift taking root.

  • JULY - Three group sessions

  • RETREAT - Aug. 9th - 16th

  • AUG - Two closing group sessions

The retreat is a time to tune into the wisdom of nature and embody what you’ve been practicing in a fully immersive way.

Then, with two final sessions after the retreat, you’ll have the support to integrate these insights into your daily life and keep the transformation alive.

“You are in the best hands possible, it is worth every penny and more, you can't put a price on soul work and community. I love the pairing of physically being challenged mixed w/ the mindfulness, mental, spiritual and emotional work. Be open to the journey, be open to yourself. You are in safe capable hands with Zoe and her team. I would do it again in a heartbeat. - Dana

PRACTICE

Council & Connection

The practice of gathering in circle is ancient.

Council is a time to explore questions you are turning over in your head, not necessarily to come to an answer, but to offer them up to the expansive landscape of the earth, and practice the art of listening for the reply.

A Day of Noble Silence

One of the truly magical elements of retreat is the intentional time spent in noble silence — dropping in and listening as you immerse yourself in nature. You will be invited to let go of conversation with others and enter into a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.

Mindfulness & Reflection

Spend time each morning deepening your mindfulness practice with guided meditation and journaling. Learn tools to quiet your mind and enhance your daily life with intentionality and presence. Cultivate a sense of calm that you can carry with you long after the retreat.

retreat ITINERARY

Canoe through a maze of glacial-carved lakes, beneath endless northern skies, where loons call and campfires flicker at dusk.

DAILY SCHEDULE:

  • Perhaps you’ll arrive to Ely this morning or have landed the night before.

In the afternoon, we’ll meet our wonderful guide Lynne Anne, from Piragis Outfitters.

Lynn Anne will guide us through our trip prep logistics like looking at the map, sorting thru food (including deciding how much coffee and what kind of teas we’ll bring!) and distribute the gear so that we can wake up the next day ready to get out on the water.

Rest well in your room at Canoe-On-Inn, a quaint mom and pop motel in Ely, Minnesota — the “gateway to the Boundary Waters”.

  • Wake up around 7am and walk to a local cafe to grab your coffee or tea and breakfast.

We’ll catch our 30-minute shuttle from town at 9am and be on the water before lunch!

Gently step into the canoes and begin to acclimate to this meditative way of travel with your canoe-mates.

We will find our way on the water and with our first portaging, ensuring we take breaks along the way to appreciate the beauty and majesty of these sacred lands and waters.

Arrive to our first backcountry site, set up camp (it gets easier every time!), join for our first council around the fire before resting into the dreamtime.

  • Morning meditation & stretching anyone?

Pack up camp & head out onto the water around 10am for 3-5 hours of paddling with breaks for snacks, lunch & community check-ins along the way.

This will be our first full day in the backcountry and we will begin to orient more towards your intention for coming on the retreat.

Journaling and deep listening practices woven in throughout the day.

This time, set up camp knowing it will be home for 2 nights.

  • Rest your paddling muscles and allow yourself to follow what feels life-giving to you today.

Morning meditation. 1:1 check in’s and time to just be.

As the evening approaches you will begin to prepare for solo — our 24 hours of noble silence.

  • Wake up with the sun & begin your solo, often one of peoples favorite days.

Although still together, we will spend the day paddling in noble silence. No need to make conversation or entertain, simply drop in and commune with the animals, nature, and yourself.

Paddle 3-5 hours, with breaks for snacks, lunch & maybe a swim along the way.

Set up camp and give your body what it needs, maybe rest, a stretch, or inner contemplation.

Supported by your wild sisters, you will be invited to share your experience of solo around the fire before resting into the dreamtime.

  • Another opportunity to start the day with functional movement and meditation.

Pack up camp & paddle 3-5 hours with breaks for snacks, lunch & community check-ins along the way.

Whew! Set up camp and celebrate another full day in the wilderness and on the water! Share a final council in the backcountry together.

  • At this point you’ll know the morning rhythm!

Perhaps our biggest paddling day yet!

Plan to paddle closer to 5 hours as we make our way toward our shuttle pick-up location where we’ll be scooped up by our lovely outfitters around 3 or 4pm.

Take a breath, savoring the wilds within and without as we prepare to cross the threshold back into modernity.

Sort through gear before loading up for the 30-minute drive back to town where we’ll land back at our motel for the evening.

Indulge in a shower and the amenities of the “front country”! You did it! Well done!

  • Say goodbyes and head home or perhaps choose to stay an extra day or two to soak up the small-town charm of northern Minnesota!!

LOGISTICS

  • We will meet in Ely, Minnesota, on the afternoon of Aug. 9th.

The closest airport is (HIB) Hibbing/Chisholm Airport which has some taxi and shuttle services available. Ely is around two hours from the airport.

If you are flying in we are happy to help you coordinate with other participants if you want to share a shuttle. This retreat is small and intimate, no more than 6 participants, so Zoe + Caitlin are available by phone and text to help every step of the way, including helping with logistics.

  • We take transitions seriously and want to make sure you have time to settle in before we head out onto the water and when we return from the wilderness before heading home.

We will be staying in the heart of Ely at a mom & pop motel before and after our time in the wilds.

What Others Are Saying

FAQ

  • Your Boundary Waters Retreat is reserved with a non-refundable $500 deposit per person.

If you cancel with 45 days of the retreat (by June 25th 2025), you may receive a full refund minus the $500 deposit.

After June 25th, Wild Minds loses the ability to sell your reserved space to other individuals or groups. Therefore, we regret that we cannot make exceptions for personal emergencies.

For this reason, we strongly recommend you consider purchasing a travel insurance plan.

Please see next question about travel insurance.

  • We strongly recommend you protect your adventure retreat by purchasing a short-term traveler's insurance policy which covers baggage loss, accidents, and trip cancellation. Wild Minds accepts no responsibility for lost, damaged or delayed property.

Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for any nonrefundable air and land expenses should you have to cancel your space due to family illness. It may also cover any emergency evacuation expenses should you become ill during the trip. Although every effort is made to ensure a safe trip, you should realize that in the event of illness or injury evacuation can be expensive. Please check your medical coverage to ensure it is adequate.

There are many travel insurance companies to choose from.

We recommend purchasing travel insurance when you make your air and lodging reservations, but no later than the date of your final trip payment. Purchasing before your final payment will often provide you with a waiver of pre-existing conditions. Insurance acquired after final payment typically does not provide protection for pre-existing conditions.

We recommend checking out Allianz and World Nomad.

  • This canoe and camping adventure is designed so you can feel pleasantly tired at the end of the day while still having enough energy for the introspection and reflection that accompany a retreat experience.

The trip is not meant to be physically intense, however we will be spending our days on the water canoeing, generally around 2-4 hours a day. In addition there will be some portages where you will be hiking around 1 mile with the canoe and bags.

We will also ask that you participate in camp love, which includes helping around in the kitchen, collecting fire wood, and contributing to making sure we have a nice camp environment.

Below are some guidelines for minimal physical requirements; if you feel comfortable with these types of activities, you are in a perfect position to enjoy your trip.

    • Paddle 2 – 4 hours/day with breaks

    • Enjoy a camping lifestyle including getting in/out of camp chairs and tents, squatting for a variety of activities, sitting for meditation, and walking up/down rocky slopes and over tree trunks.

    • Getting in/out/off a canoe and carrying it for short distances when we need to portage.

  • The meals will be prepared by our local guide LynnAnne with your assistance in the kitchen.

If you have dietary restrictions we will do our best to work with you.

We carry plenty of snacks for breaks while paddling, typically consisting of snack bars and nut mixes.

Should you have special/severe dietary restrictions or needs, let's chat and we can figure out what you might need.

  • A packing list will be provided to you once you sign up.

    PROVIDED:

    • Canoe

    • Paddles

    • Kitchen gear

    • Food

    • Group gear like tarp, maps, communication devices, first aid kit etc.

Big Item Camping Gear: This can be provided upon request, just make sure to fill out the questionnaire.

    • Sleeping Bag

    • Sleeping Pad

    • Tent

    Clothing & Personal Gear:

You will get a detailed packing list but you can start thinking about non-cotton moisture-wicking material clothing you might bring.

In addition you will need warm layers, rain gear, and water shoes.

  • The great outdoors! Don’t worry though, we will teach you everything you need to know in order to have a 5 star bathroom experience while backpacking.

  • There will not be service where we are going.

Part of this experience is going completely offline. During our group calls we will talk about the value in going offline and ways to prepare for the trip and integrate back to cell service and email after the trip.

For safety we will have a gps tracking device which we can send and receive messages on in case of an emergency. Included in the videos is information about safety and communication.

  • The group calls are a really important part of this experience. For this reason, we will send out a survey to find days & times that everyone can commit to.

On these calls you will get a chance to

    • connect with your new adventure friends

    • practice mindfulness and self-compassion techniques that you will use on the trail

    • plan how you would like to prepare mentally and physically

    • ask questions about packing and gear

  • This is a substance free trip. There is a focus and emphasis on deepening your relationship with yourself and the land. It is also an opportunity to expanding your capacity to be with the ups and downs without turning to substances.

  • This trip is for those over the age of 18. There is no age limit on who can come on this trip.

  • Mid-August in Ely, MN, gateway to the Boundary Waters, can be glorious. Warm days, cool nights, and often a refreshing breeze off the water. Average daytime temps usually range from the low 70s to low 80s°F, with nighttime lows in the 50s.

That said, we’re heading into wild territory. And in wild places, weather doesn’t always follow the script.

We could get sunshine, a gentle drizzle, or even a full-on thunderstorm.

We’ll keep an eye on the forecast together as the trip gets closer, and we’ll provide a packing list to help you prepare for a range of conditions. The key is to bring layered clothing, solid rain gear, and a mindset that’s open to the experience, whatever the sky decides to do.

Some of the most powerful, connected moments happen when we’re huddled under a tarp sipping tea, or watching the mist rise off the lake after a storm.
